“Rethinking the Barbarian” tells Derek Coghlan's story about leaving Ireland, coming to America, and living in Jacksonville and St. Augustine as an illegal alien for two years in the early 1990’s. He talks about the terrible jobs he had, how strange and foreign everything was, and how difficult it is to move to another country leaving friends, family and familiarity behind.

Coghlan masterfully examines with humor, sarcasm and a whole lot of heart the significance of immigration to America, and how race matters. Derek expressively articulates in exacting detail both the good and the disturbing moments he lived through being an undocumented immigrant in Jacksonville.

Derek Coghlan, a storyteller from Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, is from a small town in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Ireland. Derek currently teaches English at Allen D. Nease High School and single-handedly tries to ruin the minds of America's future when he’s not drowning from Hurricane flood waters. Derek has written and performed six one-man shows appearing at the Limelight Theatre, The Pioneer Barn, Players by the Sea, and The Theatre Project, Baltimore, MD.  A regular contributor to Swamp Radio, Derek has been the introductory speaker at WJCT’s 2014 and 2015 Teach Conference in Jacksonville.
